Where the Pacific
runs deep.
Panama sportfishing ranks among the best-known offshore fishing in the Americas: deep water close to shore, a seamount like Hannibal Bank, and a marine park, Coiba, that shapes life across the whole region.

Hannibal Bank: where life concentrates
Hannibal Bank is a seamount off Panama's western Pacific coast. Its relief pushes deep, nutrient-rich water toward the surface, and the big game fish gather around it: yellowfin tuna, marlin, sailfish, dorado and wahoo.
Boats usually leave from ports and lodges along the Pacific coast. Distance and trip length depend on the departure point, so it pays to choose your base with the bank you want to reach in mind.
Coiba and its surroundings
Coiba National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005, protects the largest island in Central America and a wide marine area around it. It is one of the most important marine sanctuaries in the eastern Pacific.
Fishing activity inside the park is regulated. Before planning a trip, always check with Panama's Aquatic Resources Authority (ARAP) and the Ministry of Environment: rules and zones can change.

Panama sportfishing: when and how to fish
Panama's Pacific can be fished all year. The dry season, roughly December to April, usually brings calmer seas; the rainy season brings more wind and the occasional storm, but also seasons of its own for some species. A local captain reads the moment better than any calendar.
What you can catch
- Yellowfin tunaFast and powerful; prized for the fight and for the table.

- WahooA fast open-water predator.
- RoosterfishA hard fighter of coastal waters, recognizable by its dorsal crest.
Panama fishing lodges: living and investing next to the fishery
Fishing lodges in Panama work as hospitality businesses: rooms, boats, guides and peak seasons. Buyers on this coast usually weigh three things: access (by sea, air or road), basic services (water, power, communications) and the legal status of the land.
